Ancient Rocks, Array of Flowers, Acoustical Lake
Gem Lake is an excellent “easy” spring hike. It’s located on the protected Mummy Range, which makes it warmer and drier. Gem Lake is only two miles in, but remember that you’re in Rocky Mountain National Park. The elevation at the trail’s head is 7920 ft. and to reach the lake you need to climb another 910 ft. It’s definitely worth the effort. Along the way you will become absorbed with fascinating rock formations and resilient flowers. At the end, you’ll be rewarded with a visit to a unique gem.
Because this area of RMNP receives little rain fall, chemical and mechanical weathering, over millions of years, has created unusual holes, rock deposits and fractures in the ancient granite.
Wyoming Indian Paintbrush and Miner’s Candle, are just a few of the blossoms you’ll see along the trail. Stop and smell the flowers. Why not take a moment to celebrate life?

Unique Gem Lake
Many things make Gem Lake special. Pines and Douglas-firs grace its sandy shore. Ages of weathering has turned the area into a natural amphitheater. Rain and snow melt are its only water sources, and there’s no visible outlet. The water is very calm and shallow. It’s average depth is only 1 foot. Go on, take of your dusty hiking boots and refresh your feet. Call out with a loud holler and welcome spring!
